The Atlanta University Center (AUC) Consortium invites applications for the position of the AUC Data Science Initiative Grants and Finance Manager beginning as early as March 15, 2024. The AUC Data Science Initiative (DSI) is located in Atlanta, GA, and was established in 2019 through an investment from UnitedHealth Group, and is launching HBCU-wide programs with a grant from Mastercard in 2023. The Initiative serves as a hub to catalyze data science education and research across all Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), stewarded by the AUC-member institutions, Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, Morehouse School of Medicine, and Spelman College, as well as the AUC Robert W. Woodruff Library.

As a core member of the AUC Data Science Initiative’s leadership team, the Grants and Finance Manager is responsible for managing a portfolio of grants and contracts from various entities, setting up organizational systems for close monitoring of expenditures, documenting payments, generating periodic financial reports as well as invoices, optimizing the grant administration process, preparing progress reports, ensuring compliance with grant requirements, managing grant databases, engaging with funding agencies, and defining and educating the team on financial processes and policies of the AUC Consortium.

To perform this job successfully, the Grants and Finance Manager must be able to handle fast-moving, competing priorities in a growing initiative by effectively leveraging resources to meet deadlines for numerous projects. To carry out these duties, the ideal candidate should demonstrate high integrity in financial matters and will work to build processes that are improved over a period of time.

The Grants and Finance Manager reports to the AUC Data Science Initiative’s Director and works closely with the AUC Data Science Initiative’s staff and the AUC Consortium’s operations and accounting staff.

Areas of responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate with the staff to ensure necessary steps relevant to budgeting, contract set-up and compliance, grant reporting, milestone tracking, etc., are met and all project teams track and manage finances appropriately.
  • Work with the staff and external vendors to ensure expenses submitted follow appropriate policies and procedures and are booked to appropriate funding sources and lines.
  • Facilitate approval of requisitions, and follow up on procurement orders and payment requests as per the agreed systems to resolve issues related to invoicing, expense management, and payments.
  • Review agreements from a compliance, reporting and operational management perspective.
  • Serve as liaison with the AUC Consortium operations and finance staff to ensure that external constituencies receive accurate accounting and reporting information and timely payments are made. This includes:
    • Conducting regular reviews of ledger accuracy and coordinating to rectify errors.
    • upporting the staff in preparing financial reports and help with providing rationale and responding to queries.
    • Tracking funding milestones to ensure continuity of operational funding.
  • Maintain current accounting of expenses, prepare monthly reports, and other ad-hoc reports (both financial and expense narrative).
  • Provide regular financial updates and reports to the Director.
  • Lead and develop an annual budgeting process and provide functional guidance to the team in the preparation of budgets, cash flow projections, and work plans for grant planning and reporting.
  • Work with AUC Consortium operations and accounting staff and the AUC Data Science Initiative staff to institutionalize financial management, controls, and operational protocol to ensure all processes run smoothly and are in compliance with requirements.
  • Oversee and maintain systematic documentation related to grants, budgets, contracts, and payments.
  • Work in collaboration with the AUC Data Science Initiative’s Chief of Staff and Special Events Coordinator, who supports day-to-day office operations, events, and vendors, and provide guidance and support as needed to ensure offices and events run smoothly.
  • Assist with grant writing, development, and all associated reporting functions.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required.

Education

  • Required: Bachelor’s Degree
  • Preferred: Master’s Degree

Experience

  • Experience in a relevant capacity (e.g., managing grants, budgeting, contract management, accounting, and/or finance).
  • Track record of developing and monitoring budgets, financial analysis, and financial reporting.
  • Experience in setting up administrative, financial, and tracking systems for new projects and programs.

Atlanta University Center Data Science Initiative Deputy Director

The term may be extended for a third year by mutual agreement. The Deputy Director helps lead and organize innovative programs in data science related to the candidate’s area of interest. The AUC Data Science Initiative research and academic programs are overseen by a Director and one Deputy Director and assisted by an Assistant Director of Programs and an Assistant Director of Industry Engagement charged with specific projects or responsibilities. The Deputy Director is a half-time appointment and is expected to be a faculty member in an appropriate department at an AUC member institution (Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, Morehouse School of Medicine, and Spelman College). The Deputy Director will be expected to work during the academic year and the summer.

The Deputy Director is expected to remain on the home institution’s payroll in active pay status while assigned to the AUC Data Science Initiative. Salary and benefits are expected to continue to be administered by the home institution, and the AUC Data Science Initiative will contribute half of the salary and benefits plus summer salary and benefits. The AUC Data Science Initiative supports the professional development and training of its staff, should the development or training directly relate to accomplishing the AUC Data Science Initiative’s goals.

A Deputy Director should have a Ph.D. or other terminal degree, research and teaching achievements in data science or a related field, and is expected to contribute to research and academic programmatic activities and events. Preference will be given to applicants with a scholarly background complementary to the current director and a broad perspective on data science research, teaching, and scholarship.

The Deputy Director reports to the Director and works closely with AUC Data Science Initiative’s staff.

Areas of responsibility include:

  1. Identify and help carry out research and educational programs, including planning and preparation, coordination with organizers and participants, and evaluation of outcomes.
  2. Oversee some of the activities, such as the development of a data science curriculum, topical workshops, summer research program, and outreach events.
  3. Engage and collaborate with AUC member institutions to support their data science activities.

Assistant Director of Industry Engagement

As part of the leadership team, the Assistant Director of Industry Engagement is responsible for working with the Director to develop programs, forge industry connections, and foster other career supports at HBCUs with a focus on strengthening computing and computer science and computing departments and connecting students to careers and professionals. This position will support the recruitment and activities of in-demand computing or computer science faculty members (up to 3 positions) at Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, and Spelman College. This position will support the work of these faculty members, who will catalyze the development of industry-informed curriculum and programming across computing and computer science departments at HBCUs. The Assistant Director of Industry Engagement will establish the HBCU Data Science Career Hub to connect HBCU students to data science careers and industry professionals. The Hub will engage with HBCU career services offices to provide training that prepares students for data science-oriented positions.

To perform this job successfully, the Assistant Director of Industry Engagement must be able to handle competing priorities in a growing initiative by effectively leveraging resources to meet deadlines for numerous projects. To carry out these duties, the Assistant Director of Industry Engagement will develop and be responsible for managing personnel and budgets that come under these areas. The ideal candidate will have computer science expertise and experience in working with industry and higher education on data science-related activities. The Assistant Director of Industry Engagement will serve an initial three-year term, renewable depending on funding, and may be on a non-paid leave of absence from their home institution.

The Assistant Director of Industry Engagement works closely with AUC Data Science Initiative’s staff and reports to the Director.

Areas of responsibilities include:

  • Work closely with the Director to develop the Initiative’s overall programming and engagement plan that supports strengthening computing and computer science departments at HBCUs and connecting HBCU students to careers and professionals.
  • Direct and manage all areas of programming and events, such as planning and development, reporting, logistics, and materials, as well as work with the Director and staff to ensure high-quality and strategically aligned programs and activities

To perform this job successfully, the Program Coordinator for Student Development must be able to organize, coordinate, plan, and execute various programmatic activities of a growing initiative in a collaborative team environment. The individual will work closely with AUC Data Science Initiative’s staff to support the coordination and implementation of student activities, such as planning and development, reporting, logistics, and materials. The ideal candidate will have experience working with students in higher education.

Areas of responsibilities include:

  • Work closely with the Assistant Director of Programs to coordinate the development of high-quality, strategically aligned data science programs for HBCU students;
  • Coordinates with AUC DSI staff and other partners to develop and implement student enrichment and engagement activities across HBCUs;
  • Serves as a central point of contact for student programs on day-to-day programmatic, operational, and administrative matters (i.e., assisting with meetings, special projects, seminars, workshops, etc.);
  • Create and maintain operating procedures, workflows, and task lists for programs;
  • Monitor program timelines and milestones;
  • Work closely with the Assistant Director of Programs and the Financial Coordinator to adhere to program budgets and track expenditures;

Education

  • Serves as a central point of contact for faculty and staff programs on day-to-day programmatic, operational, and administrative matters (i.e., assisting with meetings, special projects, seminars, workshops, etc.);
  • Create and maintain operating procedures, workflows, and task lists for programs;

Education

GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

The Director/Conductor of the AUC Orchestra will conduct the center-wide orchestra. As the Director/Conductor of the AUC Orchestra, you will be responsible for teaching AUC Orchestra course and presenting the Fall and Spring Orchestra Concerts at a collegiate level. The Conductor will report to the Chairs of the Music Departments of Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College and Spelman College.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as Director/Conductor of the AUC Orchestra
  • Recruit students internally and externally for orchestra
  • May teach applied lessons within the Departments of Music at Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College and Spelman College
  • Manage the budget for the orchestral program
  • Present two programs; one in the Fall, the other during the Spring Semester
  • Compliance with all University/College policies and state laws
  • Engage in collaborative efforts to recruit and retain students (particularly string players) for all of the subject institutions to the end of securing and building the orchestral program
  • Plan and develop appropriate repertoire for the yearly orchestral concerts as set out in the contractual agreement.
  • Meet at least twice a year (minimum of one time per semester) with the consortium of undergraduate Music Chairs (Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse, Spelman) during each academic year for the purpose of strategic planning and inter-departmental consultation
  • Work collaboratively with other ensemble directors in the subject undergraduate institutions toward planning and implementing potentially collaborative musical works that would necessitate the Symphony Orchestra and/or orchestral players.
  • Cooperate with consortium Chairs in an annual performance evaluation process

QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • It is preferred  this candidate holds the DMA, PhD in Music 
  • The minimum requirement is a Masters Degree in Music

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Career Services Manager plays a key role in supporting the Office of Academic, Research, and Student Services (OARSS) in its mission to support member institutions in preparing and pipelining our AUC students for the world of work or graduate school. The Manager collaborates with the Director of OARSS to oversee and manage all aspects of Career Service (CS). This collaboration includes working with leads for student affairs/activities, enrollment management, alumni affairs, institutional research, institutional advancement, and career service from the member institutions. The Manager will promote the missions and visions of the member institutions as well as the mission, vision and guiding principles of the Atlanta University Center Consortium, Inc. (AUCC).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead and facilitate in collaboration with the Director of OARSS all aspects of the Career, Federal Agencies, and Graduate/Professional School Fairs.
  • Function as a resource for AUCC member institutions’ Career Services (CS) staff.
  • Function as a resource for corporate representatives who express interest in participating /conducting on-campus recruiting activities.
  • Develop a repository of data related to internship and graduate school opportunities to include tracking student internships, employment, and graduate/professional school placement, offers, and acceptance.
  • Assist corporate representatives’ access to students and use of Handshake.
  • Develop and execute aspects of AUCC-wide recruiting initiatives.
    • In cooperation with the Communications Manager, create and maintain Career Services’ webpage and social media tools to promote professional development and networking among students.
    • Increase student participation in the graduate/professional school fair.
    • Assess career fair and graduate/professional school fair effectiveness.
    • Identify opportunities to creatively market all campus recruiting activities and events to maximize opportunities with AUC Consortium and to increase student participation in all activities and events. Develop a recruitment strategy that will assist you in meeting this goal by August of each year.
  • Educate non-business departments on the positive impact of internships and experiential learning opportunities for students and the institutions and assist them with embedding them into the major.
  • Maintain knowledge of recruitment trends, employment forecasts, student characteristics, best practices in the field, and strategic priorities of AUCC institutions.
  • Attend and be an active participant in AUCC CS collaborative meetings and initiatives.

The Atlanta University Center Consortium (AUCC) is the oldest and largest academic consortium serving primarily African American students. Its members are four historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs); two liberal arts colleges, a comprehensive research university, and a medical school; that confer undergraduate and graduate degrees across a range of disciplines. Graduates of the Atlanta University Center institutions are leaders in their chosen fields. In addition, AUC research addresses a broad range of issues, focusing on issues and disparities facing minority populations.

Shared Vision for AUCC as an Innovative Think Tank

The Council of Presidents of the Atlanta University Center (AUC), which includes the presidents of Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, Morehouse School of Medicine, and Spelman College, have developed a shared vision that shifts the AUCC from an organization focused on the coordination of individual programs and governance councils to an innovative think tank focused on thought leadership, collaboration, and innovation for strategic initiatives that will yield meaningful and effective outcomes for each campus and the AUC. Additionally, the vision for the AUCC is to provide a collaborative space to incubate innovative best practices relevant to the broader higher education community, with a special focus and emphasis on underrepresented groups in higher education.

Position Overview

The Atlanta University Center Consortium seeks an Assistant Director of Engineering Education Innovation. The employee will report directly to the Director of Academic, Research, and Student Success for the AUCC. He/she will be expected to work on a variety of complex, time-sensitive, and diverse duties for the AUCC’s Institute for Dual-Degree Engineering Advancement (IDDEA) related to outreach, program growth, faculty development, curriculum enhancement, and office management, along with general oversight of the dual-degree engineering program.

  • Implement and manage a 4+1 (BS/MS) dual-degree engineering program.
  • Serve as the Resource Advisor for the respective AUC institution’s dual-degree engineering officers and attend all related meetings.
  • Will take the initiative to develop appropriate systems and processes with the guidance of the Director for the efficient tracking, planning, and execution of AUC-wide pre-engineering projects from inception to completion.
  • Assist the Director with external engineering agreements and fundraising efforts.
  • Assist pre-engineering faculty in incorporating innovative teaching and curriculum, including design thinking and entrepreneurial mindset; interfacing, preparing data presentations, and co-managing events and meetings, including the AUCC DDEP advisory board, alumni, and external partnering institutions.
  • Provides innovative ideas, strategies, and programs related to improving academic preparation and in collaboration with the Program Manager, enhance pre-engineering students’ success and retention and graduation rates.
  • Organize and host professional development workshops, such as grant writing and research symposiums for pre-engineering faculty.
  • The vision of the AUC Consortium’s Institute for Dual-Degree Engineering Advancement is to be the premier minority engineering education program for private minority-serving institutions nationwide. It will be the number one producer of African-American engineers for liberal arts colleges/universities, excellence in teaching, intensive research, and effectively preparing graduates to be competitive for the engineering profession or graduate engineering programs. We seek an engineering education expert to assist our faculty, staff, and students in achieving this vision and assist the Director on relevant projects and administrative tasks for the program. This position will also supervise the Dual Degree Engineer Program Manager.
