ATLANTA – Students from the Atlanta University Center Symphony Orchestra recently participated in the HBCU National Band and Orchestra Directors Consortium Annual Convention, held March 25–28 at the Atlanta Evergreen Lakeside Resort.
The annual convention brought together students and directors from historically Black colleges and universities across the country, representing symphonic bands, jazz ensembles, orchestras, and auxiliary units. High school ensembles were also featured, creating a multi-level learning and performance environment that emphasized both excellence and exposure.
Dr. Bryan Alvoy, Atlanta University Center Consortium Symphony Orchestra Director and executive board member of NBODC, played a key leadership role in coordinating orchestra directors nationwide and helping to shape the convention’s programming. Students benefited from a series of workshops led by professional musicians, music educators, and arts administrators, gaining valuable insight into performance, career pathways, and leadership within the field of music.

A highlight of the convention was the formation of three premier collaborative ensembles: the All-Star Symphonic Band, All-Star Jazz Band, and All-Star Orchestra. AUCSO students were selected to perform in the All-Star Orchestra alongside peers from Morehouse College, Spelman College, Oakwood University, and Alabama A&M University.
The All-Star Orchestra, conducted by AUCSO leadership, delivered a standout performance on Friday, March 27 at 7:00 p.m. The ensemble demonstrated a high level of musicianship, collaboration, and professionalism, earning praise for their performance and representing the strength of HBCU music programs on a national stage.
“This experience provided our students with an अवसर to collaborate, learn, and perform at a high level with their peers from across the country,” said Dr. Alvoy said.
“We are incredibly proud of their dedication and performance.”

Participation in the NBODC Convention reflects the Atlanta University Center’s ongoing commitment to providing transformative educational and professional development opportunities for its students. Plans are underway to continue AUCSO’s participation in future conventions, further strengthening its presence within the national HBCU music community.
