Assistant Director of Industry Engagement

The Atlanta University Center (AUC) Data Science Initiative (DSI) invites applications for the position of Assistant Director of Industry Engagement beginning as early as January 1, 2024. The AUC Data Science Initiative is located in Atlanta, GA, and was established in 2019 through a UnitedHealth Group grant, and will launch HBCU-wide programs in 2023 with a grant from Mastercard. The Initiative serves as a hub to catalyze data science education and research across all Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), stewarded by the AUC-member institutions, Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, Morehouse School of Medicine, and Spelman College, as well as the AUC Robert W. Woodruff Library.

As part of the leadership team, the Assistant Director of Industry Engagement is responsible for working with the Director to develop programs, forge industry connections, and foster other career supports at HBCUs with a focus on strengthening computing and computer science and computing departments and connecting students to careers and professionals. This position will support the recruitment and activities of in-demand computing or computer science faculty members (up to 3 positions) at Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, and Spelman College. This position will support the work of these faculty members, who will catalyze the development of industry-informed curriculum and programming across computing and computer science departments at HBCUs. The Assistant Director of Industry Engagement will establish the HBCU Data Science Career Hub to connect HBCU students to data science careers and industry professionals. The Hub will engage with HBCU career services offices to provide training that prepares students for data science-oriented positions.

To perform this job successfully, the Assistant Director of Industry Engagement must be able to handle competing priorities in a growing initiative by effectively leveraging resources to meet deadlines for numerous projects. To carry out these duties, the Assistant Director of Industry Engagement will develop and be responsible for managing personnel and budgets that come under these areas. The ideal candidate will have computer science expertise and experience in working with industry and higher education on data science-related activities. The Assistant Director of Industry Engagement will serve an initial three-year term, renewable depending on funding, and may be on a non-paid leave of absence from their home institution.

The Assistant Director of Industry Engagement works closely with AUC Data Science Initiative’s staff and reports to the Director.

Areas of responsibilities include:

  • Work closely with the Director to develop the Initiative’s overall programming and engagement plan that supports strengthening computing and computer science departments at HBCUs and connecting HBCU students to careers and professionals.
  • Direct and manage all areas of programming and events, such as planning and development, reporting, logistics, and materials, as well as work with the Director and staff to ensure high-quality and strategically aligned programs and activities
  • Develop criteria and operating procedures and workflows for all facets of implementation of programs, e.g., partnerships outreach, communications, and engagement
  • Ensure that all timelines are met and milestones are reached
  • Work closely with the Director and the Financial Coordinator to develop the annual program budgets and ensure programs adhere to the approved budget
  • Work with the Financial Coordinator on financial transactions and management
  • Work with the Evaluation Team to evaluate programs to improve the Initiative’s capacity to learn from its work and share that learning with stakeholders
  • Work with the Communications Manager to develop marketing, advertising, and web content to develop and execute a communication plan
  • Assist with grant writing, development, and all associated reporting functions
  • Performs related responsibilities as required

Education

  • Required: Master’s Degree
  • Preferred: Doctoral Degree

Experience

  • Demonstrated project management skills, including managing complex projects

Work Location

  • While the Assistant Director of Industry Engagement position is not a remote job, the AUC Consortium provides some flexibility via telework.
  • During teleworking, you will be required to provide a space, either your home or another location, to work from at your own expense.

Position Location: Atlanta, Georgia

Salary Range: $80,000 – $85,000

OVERVIEW OF THE ORGANIZATION: RE-ENVISIONING OF THE ATLANTA UNIVERSITY CENTER COLLABORATIVE EFFORTS AND RESULTS

The Atlanta University Center Consortium (AUCC) is the oldest and largest academic consortium serving primarily African American students. Its members are four historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs); two liberal arts colleges, a comprehensive research university, and a medical school; that confer undergraduate and graduate degrees across a range of disciplines. Graduates of the Atlanta University Center institutions are leaders in their chosen fields. In addition, AUC research addresses a broad range of issues, focusing on issues and disparities facing minority populations.

Shared Vision for AUCC as an Innovative Think Tank

The Council of Presidents of the Atlanta University Center (AUC), which includes the presidents of Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, Morehouse School of Medicine, and Spelman College, have developed a shared vision that shifts the AUCC from an organization focused on the coordination of individual programs and governance councils to an innovative think tank focused on thought leadership, collaboration, and innovation for strategic initiatives that will yield meaningful and effective outcomes for each campus and the AUC. Additionally, the vision for the AUCC is to provide a collaborative space to incubate innovative best practices relevant to the broader higher education community, with a special focus and emphasis on underrepresented groups in higher education.

Position Overview

The Atlanta University Center Consortium seeks an Assistant Director of Engineering Education Innovation. The employee will report directly to the Director of Academic, Research, and Student Success for the AUCC. He/she will be expected to work on a variety of complex, time-sensitive, and diverse duties for the AUCC’s Institute for Dual-Degree Engineering Advancement (IDDEA) related to outreach, program growth, faculty development, curriculum enhancement, and office management, along with general oversight of the dual-degree engineering program.

  • Implement and manage a 4+1 (BS/MS) dual-degree engineering program.
  • Serve as the Resource Advisor for the respective AUC institution’s dual-degree engineering officers and attend all related meetings.
  • Will take the initiative to develop appropriate systems and processes with the guidance of the Director for the efficient tracking, planning, and execution of AUC-wide pre-engineering projects from inception to completion.
  • Assist the Director with external engineering agreements and fundraising efforts.
  • Assist pre-engineering faculty in incorporating innovative teaching and curriculum, including design thinking and entrepreneurial mindset; interfacing, preparing data presentations, and co-managing events and meetings, including the AUCC DDEP advisory board, alumni, and external partnering institutions.
  • Provides innovative ideas, strategies, and programs related to improving academic preparation and in collaboration with the Program Manager, enhance pre-engineering students’ success and retention and graduation rates.
  • Organize and host professional development workshops, such as grant writing and research symposiums for pre-engineering faculty.
  • The vision of the AUC Consortium’s Institute for Dual-Degree Engineering Advancement is to be the premier minority engineering education program for private minority-serving institutions nationwide. It will be the number one producer of African-American engineers for liberal arts colleges/universities, excellence in teaching, intensive research, and effectively preparing graduates to be competitive for the engineering profession or graduate engineering programs. We seek an engineering education expert to assist our faculty, staff, and students in achieving this vision and assist the Director on relevant projects and administrative tasks for the program. This position will also supervise the Dual Degree Engineer Program Manager.

Requirements

  • A Master’s degree in Engineering Technology, Engineering Education, or Engineering is required, and a Doctorate degree is preferred.
  • At-least three to five-years of supervisory experience
  • Must have a passion for student success and innovation.
  • Must be able to travel and occasionally work nights and weekends.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Exceptional problem-solving, time management, organization, and customer-service skills
  • Detail-oriented and able to meet deadlines while juggling multiple projects
  • Able to multi-task in a busy and fast-paced office environment, prioritize effectively, and collaborate well with faculty and staff
  • Demonstrate high levels of professionalism in interacting with faculty, staff, and residents/fellows
  • Excellent verbal & written communication skills; ability to draft professional reports and summaries; develop marketing materials and educational proposals
  • Must be able to develop social media campaigns and create effective posts for the AUCC Dual Degree Engineering Program.
  • Progressive experience in an academic setting.
