AUC Data Science Initiative PFx Welcomed 100 Future HBCU Data Leaders

AUC Data Science Initiative PFx Welcomed 100 Future HBCU Data Leaders

This summer, Atlanta University Center Data Science Initiative’s PreFreshman Experience (PFx) welcomed over 150 incoming freshmen from a competitive pool of 208 applicants from HBCUs around the country. Of those accepted, 100 students completed the whole week-long experience—demonstrating strong commitment and leadership in data science.

PFx is the Data Science Initiative’s annual summer bridge program powered though Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth. This virtual experience and one-week program, allowed not only HBCU students coming to the AUC in the Fall, but those headed to HBCUs around the country, to explore applications of data science and learn about different career opportunities.

The program introduces participants to the fundamentals of data science, builds confidence in technical and professional skills, and fosters a community of peers and mentors before students even step on campus. It’s designed specifically for incoming HBCU freshmen to prepare them for success in their academic journey and future careers in the field of data science. PFx aligns closely with DSI’s mission to equip students with the skills, experiences, and networks needed to thrive in a data-driven world as they enter their first year of college.

Students represented institutions including Morehouse College, Spelman College, and Alabama A&M, with interests spanning computer science, biology, psychology, and political science. While most participants hailed from the southern region, the program also saw increased engagement from other regions and international students, expanding their reach and reinforcing a goal of a more inclusive data future. This program directly supports DSI’s broader goals for student development and upskilling in the field of data science.

According to Jamal Ware, Program Coordinator for Student Development Data Science Initiative, “The agenda for the week began by asking, “What does a data scientist really do?” Students got the inside scoop. One day featured the AUC Data Science Initiative‘s Industry & Research Panel , and the gems were nonstop.”

Ware explained, “Taylor J. Bruner, Senior Analyst at The Home Depot, and Sasha Jones, Software Engineer at Mastercard, pulled back the curtain on what it really looks like to work in data. From wrangling datasets to building tools that power real business decisions, they brought honesty, clarity, and inspiration.”

He continued, “Bruner shared what it’s like to operate at the intersection of business strategy and analytics, while Jones showed how engineering and data science work hand in hand to create scalable impact. Together, they reminded our cohort that data science is more than just coding; it’s about curiosity, communication, and solving real problems that matter.”

Past PFx participants remain actively engaged throughout their time at the AUC and other HBCU institutions by joining additional workshops, taking part in skill-building events, and participating in the HBCU Data Science Influencer Student Cohort. This ongoing involvement ensures they continue to grow their technical expertise and professional networks beyond the summer program.
