For Immediate Release

The Atlanta University Center Consortium Center for Excellence in Public and Government Service held its first A.T.I. Summer Leadership Training where the goal was empowering HBCU students to become influential leaders in government service.

Atlanta – As a new school year begins nearly a dozen students are beginning with a new perspective of what government service looks like as a career.

AUCC’s CFE was established in 2023 through a $2M grant secured by Congresswoman Nikema Williams (GA-05) to fund a center to train students from AUCC member undergraduate institutions of Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, & Spelman College for a wide range of public service careers. Now up and running, the Atlanta University Center Consortium Center for Excellence in Public Service is the first center of its kind established for Historically Black College and University students.

This summer, a groundbreaking 8-week training program unfolded, offering an unparalleled journey for scholars and setting a new standard for experiential learning. The program, an immersive blend of professional development and hands-on experience, included a transformative week in Washington, D.C., where participants were in the heart of American political and federal systems.

Dr. Anika A. Evans, Center of Excellence Program Manager, “This summer has been nothing short of transformative, informative, and exhilarating. Witnessing the dedication and passion of the A.T.I. Scholars has been truly heart-warming. These remarkable young leaders are not only committed to public service but are also embodying a higher standard of service and leadership. Their potential to drive meaningful change and influence is evident, and as they continue on their journey, they will undoubtedly shine as beacons of hope and inspiration for their families, colleges, communities, and our nation.”

According to Dr. Evans, throughout this intensive program, students delved into a comprehensive curriculum designed to equip them with essential skills for the future. The training covered a broad spectrum of topics including Federal Resume Building, Office Etiquette, Public Speaking, Critical Thinking, Emotional Intelligence, and the Foundations of American Political Systems. This holistic approach not only sharpened their professional skills but also provided them with a deep understanding of the mechanisms driving our nation’s governance, she explained.

One of the program’s highlights was the opportunity for scholars to interact with 18 prestigious federal agencies and non-profit organizations. From the CDC to the Department of Homeland Security, and even the Pentagon—this cohort of students was the first group from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to be hosted by the office.

Students engaged in a variety of enriching activities during these visits, including mock interviews, Federal Resume workshops, mentoring sessions, and insightful luncheons honing their career preparation skills under the guidance of seasoned professionals.

Inspiring Connections and Exceptional Mentorship

Dr. Evans shared, “The program was distinguished by its focus on connecting students with senior leaders who not only represented their agencies but also embodied the spirit of diversity and inclusion. A particularly memorable moment was a special mentoring session with the honorable Jeh Johnson, former Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security and Morehouse College graduate. His insights and personal journey provided invaluable inspiration to the next generation of leaders.”
